PG vs VG: Whats that all about?
If you're looking to make the switch to electronic cigarettes or ecigs, you're probably curious about the different ingredients that make up an e-liquid.
Vaping terminology, as with any industry lingo can be a bit overwhelming to understand at first, so in this article we are going to explain the differences between the two most widely used e-liquid bases: propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG).
Redback Vapery premium e-liquids contain three main ingredients: Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerin and food grade flavorings.
Both propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) are non-toxic organic compounds and generally considered safe for consumption. In fact, they are already widely used as food additives in a variety of commercially available food and personal care products. It might come as a bit of a suprise, but did you know that tomato sauce contains propylene gylcol?
What what is Propylene Glycol (PG)?
Propylene Glycol by it's nature has a thinner, almost watery consistency. It is easily absorbed by the polyfill and cotton fabric inside cartomisers, coils and wick tanks, and has a number of interesting features:
- Minimal Gunk
Because it is so thin, propylene glycol doesn't easily build up on the heating element of your vaporizer as fast as it does when thicker vegetable glycerin liquid is used. The reason is simple, it can pass through and be absorbed far quicker.
- Does not affect flavor
Propylene glycol is a tasteless odorless substance, so it doesn’t alter the flavor of your favourite Redback Vapery e-liquid in any way.
- Stronger hit!
Propylene Glycol is a powerful humectant (def. retaining or preserving moisture), so whilst it will dry your mouth and throat if used consistently, it also produces a stronger throat hit, similar to the experience of smoking tobacco cigarettes.
- Allergy Risk
Unfortunately for some, propylene glycol has been known to cause allergic reactions in some e-cig users. These can vary from minor reactions, like a tingling sensation in the throat, to serious irritations on various parts of the body. If you experience any unusual symptoms after vaping PG e-liquid, it’s best to stop using it immediately and switch to vegetable glycerin. Consult your doctor if necessary.
So what is Vegetable Glycerin?
Have you ever seen vapers doing their best impersonation of a steam train by bellowing out large clouds of vapor? If so, then you can see the wonders of VG working hard
Vegetable glycerin (VG) is significantly thicker than propylene glycol (PG) and as such, has a much slower absorption rate for wicks, coils and cartomisers. The main properties of VG include:
- More gunk
Because of it's thick consistency, VG tends to gunk up and clog vaporizers, requiring more cleaning more frequently.
- It is sweet
On its own, VG is known to impart a slightly sweet taste, thus making e-liquids sweeter on the whole and the subtle flavours a little harder to detect by taste
- Less throat hit
There is little to no noticeable throat hit with VG
- Allergy Risk
Whilst PG is known to give vapers a dry mouth, some people have noticed a phlegm build-up in their throat after vaping high VG eliquids. However, VG tends to be less allergenic than PG.
- Huge Clouds of Vapor
Because of its thick consistency, VG e-liquids produce significantly more vapor.
So which is better, VG or PG?
The short answer to this is neither. Redback Vapery e-liquids are blended in either a 60/40 (60% VG, 40% PG) or 70/30 (70% VG, 30% PG) ratio in order to provide both a good throat hit and vapor production.
The vaping community is divided when it comes to e-liquid preference as some vapers enjoy the intense throat hits more than flavor and vapor, and others enjoy the sweet, thick plumes of vapor.
We have found that whilst high PG blends give the biggest throat hit for new vapers coming from a smoking background, there is little to no vapor production. We believe that vapor production is still an important psychological motivation in making a permanent switch to vaping.
At Redback Vapery, we stock a wide variety of tobacco, fruit and dessert e-liquids which will satisfy even the pickiest of vapers. We take pride in the e-liquids that we produce, and we are sure you will love them!
